How Gila Monster Venom Inspired Weight Loss Drugs
This month’s issue of The Economist has a fascinating article on anti-obesity medicines:
“In 1990 John Eng, a researcher at the Veterans Affairs Medical Centre in The Bronx, discovered that exendin-4, a hormone found in the venom of the Gila monster was similar to human GLP-1. Crucially, the exendin-4 released after one of the monster’s rare meals is more resistant to enzymatic breakdown than GLP-1, staying in its body for hours…
…it slowed the rate of “gastric emptying,” which allows food to stay in the stomach for longer and suppresses appetite…”

Are You Afraid of AI?
The people I see doing the Chicken Little regarding AI seem to be the ones who aren’t aware they’re already using it (or being used by it); can’t see that it’s ingrained in everything now like moisture in an ocean; and/or haven’t grasped that that particular filly fled the barn long ago.
It’s time to start thinking (and/or investing) in terms of AI exponentially boosting Quantum Computing. This isn’t something forthcoming way down the road but on the near horizon.
Think: human-esque robots, AI training AI on generative and language learning models, smart cities, autonomous transportation, digital currencies, etc.
Remember: if something is free, then you are the product.
I’ve been off signed off social media for almost two months now for a lot of reasons. It’s been beyond fantastic.
I’ve never been one to post a lot of selfies as the cringe factor is a bit high watching people beg for -consciously or unconsciously- external validation. Or, the “highlight reel” please-acknowledge-my-life-is-as-awesome-as-I’m-making-it-appear performative aspect of it all.
But mostly, don’t think for one hot second that the data you’re posting about yourself isn’t being used to feed and train these models. Instant gratification in the form of free dopamine hits will present the bill eventually.
After all, Google just got sued because Incognito ain’t so incognito, folks!

Thanks for taking the time to read this today, frens! I appreciate being a part of your day.
Enjoy the solar eclipse on Monday!
“Look again at that dot. That's here. That's home. That's us.
On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives.
The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every "superstar," every "supreme leader," every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there--on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam.”
