β€œShow me who your friends are and I’ll show you who you are.” - Dad

My dad preached this to me throughout my childhood.

It wasn’t until later I realized it was his spin on Goethe’s maxim:

β€œTell me with whom you consort and I will tell you who you are.”

This is similar to Jim Rohn’s popular line:

β€œYou are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.”

Epictetus also got after this in Discourses:

β€œAbove all, keep a close watch on this β€” that you are never so tied to your former acquaintances and friends that you are pulled down to their level…

…You must choose whether to be loved by these friends and remain the same person, or to become a better person at the cost of those friends… if you try to have it both ways you will neither make progress nor keep what you once had.”

Protect your inputs.

If you’re surrounded by people with habits, qualities and attitudes that don’t serve you, invite them out of your life.

You owe no one an explanation.

Remember your big picture and say bye to anything and anyone that pulls you off your path. We can only control what’s within our control, after all.

For those of you crushing the 3-Month Strength Cycle… congrats! Cycle One ends this week and you’re due a GLORIOUS deload.

I just finished my deload week and, boy, did I really need it. I’m refreshed, feeling super strong and stoked to get after cycle two.
