My dad preached this to me throughout my childhood.
It wasnβt until later I realized it was his spin on Goetheβs maxim:
βTell me with whom you consort and I will tell you who you are.β
This is similar to Jim Rohnβs popular line:
βYou are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.β
Epictetus also got after this in Discourses:
βAbove all, keep a close watch on this β that you are never so tied to your former acquaintances and friends that you are pulled down to their levelβ¦
β¦You must choose whether to be loved by these friends and remain the same person, or to become a better person at the cost of those friendsβ¦ if you try to have it both ways you will neither make progress nor keep what you once had.β
Protect your inputs.
If youβre surrounded by people with habits, qualities and attitudes that donβt serve you, invite them out of your life.
You owe no one an explanation.
Remember your big picture and say bye to anything and anyone that pulls you off your path. We can only control whatβs within our control, after all.

I just finished my deload week and, boy, did I really need it. Iβm refreshed, feeling super strong and stoked to get after cycle two.
