Results of the New Year’s Pull Up Goal Progress Test

  • I plateau’d at 52.5 lbs (where I was this time last month)

Am I pissed?

Down on myself?

Do I feel like being a quitter and flaking on my commitment to my goal because I didn’t move the needle this month?

None of the above.

Like anything else challenging and worthwhile you set out to achieve, nothing is a straight line up.

Is that weird?

I realize we’re in the age of bottom-line thinking where we want fast, easy results to hit a goal vs. long-term dedication to the practice of mastery and all the permanent treasure that lies within that process.

But if you want staying power, stop searching for the magic wand or giving in so easily to weak excuses.

What Did I Learn After Training Hard and Not Increasing My Max?

  • The results are simply feedback on my training, sleep and nutrition

  • I need to adjust to what my body has adapted to these first couple months of the training.

    • This means I’m going to decrease volume and increase weight.

    • Instead of training high rep pull ups with 20lbs, I’m going to lower reps to the beginner progression and use 30lbs.

  • Keeping muscle on and strength up at 51 is significantly harder than even five years ago.

    • Use it or truly lose it.

It’s always good to remember that to get across the river sometimes you have to slip on the first few rocks.

Ain’t always graceful or painless.

Trying and not hitting the mark isn’t failure as long as you don’t quit and keep showing up.

The only actual failure is turning your back on the things you proclaim to want yet take no action towards.

Stop waiting until you’re “ready”

Simply begin and burn the bridge behind you along with the excuses.

The lessons you need to realize your heart’s desire will arrive along the way.

For example, most people don’t learn to change a tire until they’re on the side of the road in rush hour traffic in pouring rain. They weren’t ready. You don’t need to be ready. You need to get off your duff and do something.

Stop consuming. Start creating.

Understand that plateaus are a necessary part of the path. Not an excuse to quit.

Get out of your head and get into action.

As long as you take breath, you are capable and creative.

Talk next week. Have a great weekend!

For anyone interested in hitting new pull up goals with weight, reps, or with-or-without assistance, the pull up progression will 100% get you there.*

*If your nutrition, recovery or ancillary training are trash, it won’t get you there.
