Taking the High Road is Hard
At least for me.
Especially when I’ve got a razor-whipped comeback with the edge of a handcrafted Japanese knife jumping up and down on my tongue, spring-coiled tight for maximum impact.
Especially when I feel justified.
It feels so good to set it free for about a nano-second.
But, like everything else, when we choose our actions, we choose our consequences.
In psychologist Paul Gilbert’s Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT), the above scenario is reflected in what’s called the threat system.
According to this article in Psyche:
The threat system often overrides other systems, which is important for understanding explosive conversations; when left to its own devices, it makes it challenging to take the high road. It isn’t very good at distinguishing between ‘real’, physical threats and social threats that involve criticism or rejection. When others come at us in ways that trigger our threat systems, we’re neurologically disposed to react as if danger were approaching. It’s not our fault that the brain works this way. But it’s our job to do what we can – such as activating the safeness system – so that we don’t get hijacked.

P.S.
No matter what training you follow, it’s crucial to keep in mind that — especially for AFB women — it’s NOT about going heavier and harder in order to grow lean mass.
You must consider:
the muscles being trained (in groups or isolated?)
calibrating the volume each week vs. the load
knowing when to dial back the above bullet point
how the muscles and central nervous system are being repaired, rested, fed, and hydrated after stressing them in the gym.
For example, you wouldn’t take a Thoroughbred to the track for a workout or race then throw it back in the stall and give it…. nothing… and then expect great results the next time you take it out.
But this is what the majority of people do to themselves. And it makes their training effort an utter waste…
… leaving them with no way to build upon their work or reverse unwanted scenarios developing in their bodies.
If you go to the gym on Friday afternoon then shit the bed all weekend with poor choices… my question is:
Why did you waste your time in the gym?
Take care of yourself like someone you’re responsible for helping.
When you choose to shit the bed, you’re also choosing to shit all over yourself. Why do you think you deserve that?
If you wouldn’t allow someone to take a dump on your best friend or anyone else you love, then why is it okay to do to yourself?
